Dynamic Dyckias!
Dyckia are related to the pineapple, both are in the bromeliad plant family, Bromeliaceae. There are over a hundred species of Dyckia found mostly in sunny and rocky habitats in Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, Argentina and Bolivia. They have long, narrow leaves, almost all of them with spines along the leaf margins.
Unlike other bromeliads, each Dyckia plant continues to flower each year. The remainder of bromeliads only flower once then grow new plants from base of plant that dies after flowering. Flower colors are usually red, yellow and orange and emerge from a long, vertical plant structure called an inflorescence.
Hummingbirds love to feed from the flowers. The leaf colors are even more diverse. They can be red, yellow, green, purple, rose, bronze and silver. These plants require minimal water once established and are able to thrive in the severe weather of Central Texas.
